Dragons Rest – Underberg – Kwazulu Natal

Dragons Rest

Dragons Rest

Dragons Rest is a 30 hectare farm, owned and run by Kelvin Strachan.  Kelvin offers camping and self catering.  The camping is divided into camps 1 – 5, each probably managing to accommodate up to 6 tents, campervans or caravans.   All have braai facilities, are grassed, have water points and are electrified.

Ablution facilities offer hot/cold water showers, a bath in each and two toilets in each ablution male/female.   There are laundry facilities to be found at the ablution block.  These are coin operated.  The price per load of washing is R10, however because Kelvin offers hot water for washing, he charges an additional charge of R40 per load.  Price per tumble dry is R15 and an additional R10 for electricity.   An ironing facility is also offered at an additional charge.

Views from the camps are amazing… now being Winter, we have the Drakensberg capped in snow, trees with changing leaves of reds, browns and deep amber, lying on the ground, forming a bed on which to walk.   Cows moo softly in the meadows surrounding the farm and if  you listen carefully at night, you might hear the calls of the black backed jackals.

Kelvin is a bachelor and loves to entertain his guests.  He has a fully stocked pub which is open every evening to guests in season.  For those winter evenings, Kelvin has a fireplace which warms the interior of his home and pub.

The farm has a lake which is stocked with trout and Kelvin offers fly fishing lessons at R350 per hour.   Dragons Peak is also home to Big Sky Safaris which is owned and run by Kelvin, offering trips up the Sani Pass into Lesotho for a visit or for fly fishing, the choice is yours.  For rates, please contact Dragons Peak directly.

Charge for self catering per person is R395 per night.  Camping for 2 people per campsite is R250 per night (inlcusive of electricity).  Additional persons are charged at R100 per night.

Monthly rate for 2 persons per night is R2500 (pensioners rates inclusive of electricity).

Internet connectivity is sporadic and intermittent.   We only managed to get 2G most of the time.  3G is available in town at The Lemon Tree which has wi-fi.  Cellphone reception is available but here again connectivity is not the best.

Dragons Peak is dog friendly and has fantastic walks around the farm and in the forest. Provided your dogs are well behaved and don’t chase his cattle, Kelvin encourages you to walk them wherever you like and off lead.

Cintsa Beach Walk

It was another lazy Saturday afternoon in Cintsa. Tina was indulging in a siesta so I decided to take the dogs for a leisurely beach walk. One of the most appealing things about Cintsa is the pristine sandy beach that follows the curve of the bay for miles. Tina and I had noticed an astonishing […]
